Magnesium Is one of the most important minerals, that reacts on, over 300 enzymes in the body.
Most of the magnesium in a horse is stored in the bones and the most instantly available magnesium is stored in the hind gut.
In the modern world and environment, many horses use up their instantly available magnesium very rapidly. By doing this, they are then unable to replace the magnesium quickly enough from the bones.
In the horse, magnesium helps to normalise and maintain blood circulation, muscle and nervous tissue.
Magnesium also helps to maintain a normal demeanour in nervous and excitable individuals. Magnesium being an alkali can help to maintain normal gastric acid levels.
There are many types of magnesium, mostly from mineral salt origins, magnesium oxide, magnesium sulphate to name but two. Also there are chelated magnesiums, which are made up of more organic types of magnesiums and then tied to proteins. These types of magnesium are more absorbable and better utilized than the salt/rock types of magnesium.
